Seven Foods that prevent Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women. A change in the diet and a healthy body weight can help reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Scientists have difficulty studying the role of diet in cancer development.
However, studies have shown that when compared to American women, Japanese women have a lower risk of breast cancer. But, if they immigrate to the US, their risk becomes equal to that of their American counterparts, and this is most probably due to the diet changes – fish and vegetables are replaced by processed foods and sugars.
The following foods have been researched in relation to breast cancer prevention:
Fibre lowers the levels of estrogen in pre-menopausal women which reduces the risk of breast cancer. Only 25 grams of fibre per day can help with breast cancer prevention in women who had not yet had their menopause. A plant-rich diet is full with fibre and antioxidants, and is also low in sugar, which makes you less prone to cancer.
Fruits are a good source of fibre and antioxidants. Fruits that are rich in vitamins A, C, E and selenium have an especially potent antioxidant effect.
Antioxidants prevent chemical reactions that can lead to gene and cell changes. An abnormal change to the cell can mean the start of a cancer growth. The ominous changes can happen during the oxidation process when oxygen joins with another molecule, so antioxidants work by stopping this process.
According to some studies, women who have higher levels of carotenoids in their blood might have a lower risk of breast cancer. Some of the most common carotenoids sources include: carrots, papaya, bell peppers, sweet potato, kale, tomato, etc.
Flavonols and flavones
Women who consume plants rich in flavonols and flavones are found to have a lower risk of breast cancer. Sources of flavonols include: onion, broccoli, black tea, green tea, oolong tea, fruits, dark chocolate, berries, etc. Sources rich in flavones: aromatic herbs, chamomile tea, celery, etc.
Many studies have shown vitamin D to block cancer cell growth and regulate cell cycle. According to one study, post-menopausal women with higher levels of vitamin D had up to 70% reduction in their breast cancer risk.
Pomegranate is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols. In mice, pomegranate extract and pomegranate seed oil have been observed to reduce the occurrence of breast cancer by 87%. Eat one pomegranate daily.
Curcumin causes the death of cancer cells and it appears to be effective even in cases of breast cancer resistant to traditional chemotherapy.
Of course, the best cancer protection does not mean consuming only one single fruit, fibre or nutrient, but a combination of different foods.
